Before you go

How to pick a book club

The first split is whether you have to read the book. Discussion clubs pick one title a month and expect you to finish it. Silent reading clubs ask nothing: everyone brings whatever they are already reading, reads in the same room for an hour, then talks. If you have bounced off book clubs before, the silent format is usually why.

The second split is where they meet. Library programs are free, run on a fixed schedule, and are the easiest to join cold. Pub and cafe clubs are more social and less structured. A few run entirely online.

Genre matters more than group size. A general fiction club and a non-fiction club draw different people, and most cities on this list have both.

Questions

Finding book clubs in your city

Which cities does this cover?

18 book clubs across Toronto, Guelph, Vancouver and Atlanta. Each city links through to its own page, and every group links out to wherever it already organises.

Are book clubs free to join?

Library book clubs are free. Pub, cafe and independent clubs are usually free to attend but you buy your own drink, and a few charge a small membership or per-event fee, which their own page states.

What is a silent book club?

Everyone brings whatever they are already reading, reads quietly in the same room for about an hour, then talks about it over a drink. There is no assigned title and nothing to finish beforehand.

Do I have to have finished the book?

For a discussion club, yes, that is the format. For a silent reading club or a general social reading group, no. The listing says which kind each one is.

Do I need the Culdesac app to join?

No. This page is free to browse and every group links out to its own signup. The app matters once a group runs its own chat and calendar on Culdesac.
