How to pick a hiking club
Check how you get to the trailhead. The larger clubs organise carpools or a bus from a set meeting point in the city, which is the difference between a hike you can join without a car and one you cannot. Smaller groups meet at the trailhead.
Most clubs rate their hikes by difficulty, distance and elevation gain, and post the rating with each outing. Start one rating below what you think you can do, because the pace of a group hike is set by the leader, not by you.
Some of these are conservation and trail-maintenance organisations that also hike. Those tend to charge an annual membership, run the most outings, and carry insurance. Casual meetup-style groups are free and looser.
