Before you go

How to pick a hiking club

Check how you get to the trailhead. The larger clubs organise carpools or a bus from a set meeting point in the city, which is the difference between a hike you can join without a car and one you cannot. Smaller groups meet at the trailhead.

Most clubs rate their hikes by difficulty, distance and elevation gain, and post the rating with each outing. Start one rating below what you think you can do, because the pace of a group hike is set by the leader, not by you.

Some of these are conservation and trail-maintenance organisations that also hike. Those tend to charge an annual membership, run the most outings, and carry insurance. Casual meetup-style groups are free and looser.

Questions

Finding hiking and outdoor clubs in your city

Which cities does this cover?

42 hiking and outdoor clubs across Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, Atlanta, Guelph and London. Each city links through to its own page, and every group links out to wherever it already organises.

Do hiking clubs provide transport to the trailhead?

Some do. Larger clubs organise carpools or a bus from a fixed meeting point in the city, which their outing listings state. Smaller and meetup-style groups usually meet at the trailhead.

Are hiking clubs free?

Meetup-style hiking groups are free. Established trail associations and conservation clubs charge an annual membership, typically because they maintain trails and carry insurance for their outings.

Can a beginner join a hiking club?

Yes. Most clubs rate each outing by difficulty, distance and elevation gain, and run easy-rated hikes. Pick one rating below what you think you can manage, since the pace is set by the group.

Do I need the Culdesac app to join?

No. This page is free to browse and every group links out to its own signup. The app matters once a group runs its own chat and calendar on Culdesac.
