About this event

Directed by Masayuki Suzuki and written by Kundō Koyama, Yudo: The Way of the Bath (2022) brings the unique charm of Japan’s traditional public bathhouse culture to audiences around the world. Architect Shiro Miura (Toma Ikuta) returns to his hometown following his father’s death, intending to demolish the family’s aging public bathhouse, “Marukin Hot Springs,” and replace it with condominiums. His plans meet resistance from his younger brother, Goro (Gaku Hamada), who has kept the business running. When a boiler room fire sends Goro to the hospital, Shiro reluctantly takes over the bathhouse with help from devoted employee Izumi (Kanna Hashimoto). Through encounters with its colourful regulars, he gradually discovers the bathhouse’s unique sense of community and the simple joys it brings, prompting him to reconsider his plans and priorities. This film is in Japanese with English subtitles.
